MLnet Special Interest Groups

February 12, 2000

MLNET establishes "Special Interest Groups" around specific themes. A MLNET special interest group (MLNET-SIG) consists of a set of nodes of MLNET that concerns a specific theme or subarea. At the moment there is no framework for defining MLNET-SIGS. Case-Based Reasoning and Knowledge Acquisition in practice have the status of MLNET-SIG. An MLNET-SIG can also be defined about a type of application or in some other way.

The purpose of SIGs is to give subcommunities within MLNET a stronger identity in the form of publicity, activities access to resources of MLNET and thereby to increase the involvement of subcommunities in MLNET actions. A MLNET-SIG consists of the following:

  • a chairperson
  • contact persons that will represent the MLNET-SIG in the main MLNET actions (Information Service, Technological Roadmap, Education, Application Guide)
  • a description of the topic of the MLNET-SIG and its activities
  • a representative in the MLNET management board, elected or otherwise appointed by the MLNET-SIG community. One of the two chairpersons is delegated by the MLNET-SIG to the MLNET board with the other person as "reserve".
  • claim on support for at least one event to be organised by the MLNET-SIG
  • identifiable part on the MLNET information service in the form of a page describing actvities, news etc. of the MLNET-SIG
  • identifiable MLNET-SIG activities

A group of MLNET nodes can propose to become a MLNET-SIG by submitting a proposal to the MLNET management board.

A MLNET-SIG can be proposed by a group of MLNET nodes. A proposal consists of:

  • a description of the topic of the MLNET-SIG and its activities
  • a chairperson · list of nodes and persons who want to participate in the MLNET-SIG
  • contact persons that will represent the MLNET-SIG in the main MLNET actions (Information Service, Technological Roadmap, Education, Application Guide)
  • a representative for the MLNET management board, elected or otherwise appointed by the MLNET-SIG community.
  • a proposal for at least one event to be organised by the MLNET-SIG

The proposal should be sent to the coordinator and a decision will be taken by the MLNET management board.
