Description

 

Research Assistants (Two posts)

Two ESRC/EPSRC-funded posts are available at the University
for a joint project between the Automated Scheduling,
Optimisation and Planning (ASAP) research group, within the
School of Computer Science and IT, and the ESRC Centre for
Research in Development, Instruction and Training (CREDIT),
within the School of Psychology. Both groups are renowned
internationally for their research. The ASAP group currently has
four full-time staff members, four research assistants and 10 PhD
students. The CREDIT group has 20 staff and research assistants,
and seven PhD students.

The successful candidates will work jointly on a project entitled
Representational Design Principles to Humanise Automated
Scheduling Systems. The project aims to bring together recent
advances in the design of human centred visualisation of complex
information with advances in the development of heuristics for
complex scheduling problems, to develop and empirically evaluate
software systems which are capable of generating excellent
practical schedules using both human cognitive abilities and
advanced heuristics. A commercial collaborator (OPTIME) will
ensure applicability of research results.

Post 1 - Based primarily in the School of Computer Science and
Information Technology, the successful candidate will be
responsible for investigation and implementation of new
scheduling models, development and implementation of interface
system architectures and investigation of meta- and hyper-
heuristic approaches to schedule generation.

Post 2 - Based primarily in the School of Psychology, the
successful candidate will be responsible for investigation of
representational design principles, development and integration of
interface prototypes and design, management and analysis of
experiments to evaluate the design principles.

Salary will be within the range 16,286 - 18,185 per annum
(under review), depending on qualifications and experience.
These posts will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of
up to three years.
