Description
Applications will be soon invited for a research assistant position (assegno di ricerca) in computer science. The post is for 18 months (with the possibility of renewing the appointment depending on performance) starting from January 1st, 2001 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is financed by a Framework V European project focussed on the development of adaptive systems for the semantic analysis of multimedia documents. These systems will be based on the integration of innovative machine learning techniques (Support Vector Machines and other methods based on kernel functions) with established techniques in Information Retrieval, such as Latent Semantic Indexing. The goal is to provide cross-lingual information categorization, ranking, filtering and clustering. The prototypes will be evaluated against state-of-the-art techniques on one of the world's largest news databases. The project's consortium includes four academic and two industrial partners. The academic members of the consortium have a long experience of successful collaboration in the area of Machine Learning and Statistical Learning Theory within the IV Framework projects NeuroCOLT and NeuroCOLT II. The appointee will work on: (1) design of kernels for the semantic analysis of documents, (2) design of algorithms based on these kernels, (3) implementation and testing of the algorithms. Application forms will made available starting from October 10, 2000 at ricerca.unimi.it/collaborazioneallaricerca/ The applicant must be a graduate in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics or Physics (PhD is preferred but not required). EU citizenship is required for all candidates. The activity will be based at the University of Milan Research Center (Polo Didattico e di Ricerca) located in Crema, 40Km from Milan. The Research Center (see www.crema.unimi.it) is a new and rapidly growing institution site of two industrial research labs. The Center offers programs in Information and Social Technologies that are currently attended by over 500 students. The salary is ITL 2,200,000 (after taxes) per month.
