Description
The Smart Media Institute, a research center in University College Dublin's Computer Science Department, has an opening for a postdoctoral fellow. With ever more organizations and home and office appliances connected to the network, the motto is quickly becoming: if it's available, its on the net. This powerful new "information ecosystem" creates numerous opportunities for information integration and other data management applications. Emerging standards such as XML simplify these applications in some ways, but semantic heterogeneity remains a core technical challenge. We have received substantial research funding to develop adaptive information integration techniques to cope with semantic heterogeneity. Candidates should have (or soon complete) a PhD in databases, information integration, machine learning, knowledge acquisition, ontologies, or a related area. This project will involve substantial development, so a strong software engineering background and facility with Web technologies (HTML, Javascript, etc) are essential. We expect the fellow to play a substantial role in defining a research agenda that suits their own interests. Modest funding for conference travel and other research expenses will be provided. This position is funded by the European Commission's Marie Curie Development Host Fellowships programme. As such, there are stringent eligibility requirements: roughly, you must have a PhD, be under 35, and be an EU national or long-term resident, but you can't be an Irish national or have resided in Ireland for the past year; see www.cordis.lu/improving/src/hp_mcf.htm for details. This position is for eighteen months, starting September-November 2005. Salary: Euro 3695 per month plus travel expenses, per EC guidelines. Interested candidates should send a CV, two or three recent research papers, and two letters of reference to the contact address below. NOTE: This position is available *only* subject to final approval from the European Commission; final contract negotiations are currently in progress. With an emphasis on artificial intelligence, personalized Web content, and information retrieval, the Smart Media Institute conducts basic research into next-generation intelligent information services. The UCD Computer Science Department comprises 23 academic staff members and some 70 postgraduate students, and has recently expanded into a second dedicated building. University College Dublin is the largest university in Ireland, and Dublin is an intriguing (albeit damp) place to live. University College Dublin is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Additional information about the Department is available at www.cs.ucd.ie.
