Call for Papers The UK Workshop on Computational Intelligence 10-12th September, 2001 Edinburgh, UK Workshop homepage: http://www.dai.ed.ac.uk/~ukci-01 The 2001 UK Workshop on Computational Intelligence (UKCI-01) will be held at the centrally-located Edinburgh-First Conference Centre, Edinburgh, UK, from 10th September 2001 till 12th September 2001. Computational Intelligence (CI) is a rapidly expanding research field, attracting a large number of scientists, engineers and practitioners working in areas such as fuzzy systems, neural networks, machine learning and evolutionary computation. Also, a growing number of companies are employing CI techniques to improve previous solutions and to deal with new problems. In particular, there have been successful developments recently in combining different CI techniques, and conventional methods, to build hybrid intelligent systems. These include smart adaptive systems that allow the achievement of stability in spite of changes which are either external or internal to the system, thereby increasing the re-usability of developed systems. The aim of this workshop is to provide a forum for the academic community and industry to share ideas about developing and using CI technique-based systems and exchange views. The informal setting will encourage a lively atmosphere for discussing future research problems and for forging new contacts and collaborations. The workshop will include paper presentations and invited lectures by eminent CI researchers. It has been deliberately set as a low-cost event, so that young researchers in academia and industry may actively participate as well as established workers in the field. TOPICS UKCI-01 invites contributions of papers in all of the traditional and hybrid CI areas. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to: * Theoretical foundations (e.g. mathematical and statistical models; learning strategies and systems; reasoning and meta-control; transparency and interpretability; smart and adaptive mechanisms; logical and philosophical issues) * Hybrid systems (e.g. symbolic and non-symbolic; neural and fuzzy; fuzzy, neural and genetic; fuzzy and probabilistic; hierarchical and purpose-built) * Problem-solving methods (e.g. monitoring and control; estimation and identification; prediction and simulation; clustering and classification; interpretation and recognition; optimisation and planning; data mining and knowledge discovery) * Application systems (e.g. industrial automation; financial time series analysis; image understanding; information retrieval; Web intelligence; e-commerce; biomedical informatics; multimedia and telecommunications) * Survey and methodological issues (e.g. classifying and relating CI approaches; evaluating CI approaches; criteria for selecting CI methods) SUBMISSION OF PAPERS Prospective authors are invited to contribute papers to the workshop. Submissions are made on the understanding that at least one author of an accepted paper will be presenting the paper. As UKCI-01 is a workshop, submission of the same paper to a formal conference or an academic journal is acceptable. A POSTSCRIPT, PDF or WORD file of the paper (or extended abstract) not to exceed 5000 words (excluding references) may be submitted via email to: ukci-01@dai.ed.ac.uk or via the Web: http://www.dai.ed.ac.uk/~ukci-01/submitform.php If submitted by email, please give the following information in plain text: title of the paper; authors names; affiliation; and the postal address, e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers of the contact author. REVIEW PROCESS Papers will be selected according to their potential to generate discussion. Each paper will be reviewed by members of the programme committee. Accepted contributions will be collected in an official proceedings as working papers and will be available for the attendees at the Workshop. IMPORTANT DATES Paper submission due: 1 July, 2001 Notification of acceptance: 20 July, 2001 Final version due: 8 August, 2001 Registration: To be determined The workshop: 10-12 September, 2001 REGISTRATION FEE A flat fee of 160 Pounds Sterling will be charged for each registration.
