1999 ACM SIGMOD Workshop on Research Issues in Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery (SIGMOD'99 DMKD), held in cooperation with SIGMOD'99, Philadelphia, USA, May 30 1999 =========================================== URL: http://www.almaden.ibm.com/cs/dmkd OBJECTIVES ---------- The Workshop on Research Issues on Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery (DMKD) was started three years ago as a forum to encourage database researchers to discuss and investigate data mining research issues focusing on large databases and data warehouses. Therefore, the first two DMKD Workshops primarily focused on advances in data mining algorithms for large databases. However, as Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery successfully attracted people and became one of the active research areas in the database community, DMKD '98 changed the focus to research issues and experience in developing and deploying data mining systems, applications and solutions. For this year's workshop, we focus on four specific areas: experiences in deploying data mining systems, database/mining integration, novel techniques and future directions. FORMAT ------ The workshop will be held the day preceeding the SIGMOD/PODS'99 conference. We plan to conduct four sessions with 5-6 speakers in each session. The sessions will be a hybrid between a panel and a regular conference session. The speakers will have about 10 minutes each to present an idea, an experience or a position, followed by 1/2 hour of discussion. The program will also include two invited talks (1/2 hour each) that will share the experiences in developing and deploying data mining technologies. SESSIONS -------- We describe below the planned sessions, along with the major topics of interest for each session. Of course, the sessions are not limited to the listed topics. We welcome idea, experience and position papers for all the sessions, e.g. "Do we really need faster associations algorithms?" for the algorithms session. (1) Applications/Experiences Session: - Experience in building, deploying or evaluating a data mining application - Novel applications of existing or new techniques (2) Data Mining System Architectures: - Support for data mining in database engines - Languages and interfaces for integrating data mining with database querying - Integration of data mining and data warehousing - Integration of data mining and OLAP - Real-time data mining (3) Algorithms Session: - Novel algorithms and techniques (focus on work in progress). (4) Future Directions Session: - Open problems for which current mining techniques are inadequate - New application challenges and requirements (focus on specific problems) SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACT ---------------------- Papers should be no more than 5 pages (single-spaced) in Plain Text, Postscript, or Word97 format. The papers should be submitted electronically as follows. (1) Send an e-mail to dmkd99@research.bell-labs.com at least 3 days prior to the submission deadline with title, authors and affiliations. (2) Send your paper to dmkd99@research.bell-labs.com until the due date. Submissions should specify a specific session. REGISTRATION ------------ There is no separate registration for the workshop. It is included in the SIGMOD/PODS'99 registration IMPORTANT DATES --------------- Abstract Due: March 22, 1999 Notification of Acceptance: April 30, 1999 Camera Ready Copy Due: May 14, 1999 Workshop Date: May 30, 1999 WORKSHOP CHAIRS --------------- Kyuseok Shim, Bell Laboratories (shim@research.bell-labs.com) Ramakrishnan Srikant, IBM Almaden Research Center (srikant@almaden.ibm.com) PROGRAM COMMITTEE ----------------- Ramesh Agarwal, IBM T.J.Watson Research Center Andreas Arning, IBM Germany Roberto Bayardo, IBM Almaden Research Center Surajit Chaudhuri, Microsoft Research Umeshwar Dayal, Hewlett-Packard Research Usama Fayyad, Microsoft Research Dimitrios Gunopulos, University of California, Riverside Jiawei Han, Simon Fraser University H.
