Call for papers Journal of Integrated Computer Aided Engineering - Special Issue on Engineering and Industrial Applications of Machine Learning Guest Editors: Robert Engels and Floor Verdenius Introduction A special issue of the ICAE will be published that is concerned with the engineering and industrial applications of machine learning techniques. We aim at making this special a high quality sample of ongoing research that is concerned with the application of machine learning techniques, including, but not limited to, techniques from statistics, machne learning, connectionisme, genetic and evolutionary learning, case based reasoning and reinforcement learning. An increasing number of companies and institutes work with learning techniques, for instance in planning, scheduling, quality control, data mining and knowledge discovery in databases, process modelling and so on. This special issue intends to report high quality application oriented research going on in these fields. This hypothesis is also supported at the last workshops and conferences that are organized and had contributions in this direction (among others: ICML-95, ICML-97, PADD-97, PKDD-97, forthcoming: AAAI-98 workshop, ECML-98 and IEA/AIE-98). Research presented at such workshops as well as conferences might also be considered for publication. In order to make this special issue a success we look for high quality submissions. Only unpublished original papers will be considered for possible publication in the special issue. Submission of the paper implies that the paper or no variation of it has been published or currently being considered for publication elsewhere. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Topics: Topics that will be considered for publication are * development of algorithms and techniques with a thorough evaluation of their practical value and the implications of applying them in reality. * methodological issues concerning the application of learning techniques such as: o process definition of typical learning applications o methodologies for applying learning techniques o definition of interdependencies between several stages of application of learning techniques * the relevance of learning techniques for Computer Aided Engineering * solutions for real world problems in Computer Aided Engineering that make use of learning techniques and their embedment in the application * successtories from the industry might be published as short application contribution ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Submission deadline: October 1st, 1998 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Guidelines Formatting Guidelines: * Major (original) contribution: Papers are limited to 35 double-spaced pages including figures and tables (roughly equivalent to 12 typeset pages). * State-of-the-art review article: Papers are limited to 35 double-spaced pages including figures and tables (roughly equivalent to 12 typeset pages). * Short contributions: Short papers are limited to 15 double-spaced pages (equivalent to 5 typeset pages). It is strongly advised that potential authors take some time to become familiar with the scope and format of the ICAE-journal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Submission address (also contact address for more information): Robert Engels (Drs.)
