The Fifth International Workshop on MULTISTRATEGY LEARNING (MSL 2000) 5-7 June 2000 Guimarães, Portugal Multistrategy Learning Workshops provide a forum for presenting and discussing research on algorithms and methods for integrating different learning strategies into multistrategy learning and problem solving systems. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: Comparative studies of learning strategies, methods, and paradigms Cognitive models of learning, inference, and discovery Methods for integrating learning strategies Multistrategy methods for mining large databases and WWW Strategies for knowledge extraction from data, texts, and/or images Design and implementation of multistrategy learning systems Goal-oriented control in multistrategy learning systems Applications of multistrategy learning systems MSL 2000 will be held in a picturesque town Guimarães, which is accessible from Porto, Portugal which has an international airport. Acceptance notices will be sent by e-mail by April 1, 2000. A camera-ready, hard copy of the final manuscript must be received by May 1, 2000. Participation To provide a good working atmosphere, the participation in MSL'2000 is limited to about 60 participants. Those interested in participation without presenting a paper should send an email with a brief description of their current research to program co-chairs. Local Organization Alípio Jorge, João Gama, Luís Torgo, Pavel Brazdil LIACC , University of Porto, Rua do Campo Alegre 823, 4150 Porto, Portugal Phone: (+351) 22 607 8830, Fax: (+351) 22 600 3654 Location of the Workshop The workshop will take place at one of Portuguese historical state-owned luxury hotels, which are referred to in Portugal as Pousadas. The Workshop will take place at Pousada de Santa Marinha. Earlier it was a monastery and most of the buildings were built in the 16th century. The feeling of the history is certainly around and thus provides perfect conditions for this event and fruitful discussions. It is a relatively short distance outside the town of Guimarães which is also historical city with many interesting corners to visit. Accomodation should be booked through local organization. The prices (per night) are: Single room (half pension and breakfast): 20.000 Escudos (~100 Euros) Double room (2x half pension and breakfast): 28.000 Escudos (~140 Euros) Shuttle transport will be provided from Porto Airport which is about 60 km away (as it is nearly all the way on motorway, the journey takes about 30 minutes). The participants travelling to Porto through Lisbon can take a connecting flight to Porto (there are many flight per day). The distance is 330 km and the flight takes about 45 mins. The participants coming directly from ECML-2000, Barcelona, can take a flight to Porto. There are 1-2 direct flights per day and other connections via Lisbon and other cities. The price of return flight to Barcelona (APEX) is around 400 DM. Sponsors and Acknowledgements This workshop is sponsored by MLNet and COIL. The support is gratefully acknowledged. Previous MSL Workshops This workshop is the fifth one in the series of multistrategy learning workshops organized up todate. The first three - MSL'91, MSL'93 and MSL'96 took place at Harpers Ferry, USA and were organized by MLI at George Mason University. MSL'98 took place in Decenzano del Garda, Italy and was organized by University of Torino, and University of Bari in collaboration with George Mason University.
