Second Announcement and Call for Papers

21st Annual Conference - University of Potsdam - March 12-14, 1997

The conference program will include methods and applications of

Classification, Data Analysis and Information Processing.

The scientific program will consist of plenary lectures and special
sections. Interdisciplinary aspects and interrelations between theory and
practice will be particularly emphasized.

It is the first time the conference will be held in Brandenburg. This is by
invitation of Potsdam University. Special emphasis will be placed on the
topic of

Data Highways and Information Flooding, a Challenge for Classification and
Data Analysis.

In particular, the following sections are planned (organizers in brackets).

   * Data analysis, visualization and computational statistics (Härdle,

   * Information systems and databases (Oberweis, Stucky)
   * Information retrieval and information networks for libraries (Hermes)
   * Knowledge based methods and classification (Richter)
   * Machine learning (Hennings)
   * Knowledge organization and integrated retrieval (Fuhr)
   * Conceptual analysis of data and knowledge (Ganter)
   * Marketing, consumer behavior and finance (Balderjahn, Locarek-Junge)
   * Statistics and econometrics (Ronning)
   * Disaggregation of aggregated data (Wright)
   * Molecular biology and gene analysis (Ludwig)
   * Medicine and neurophysiology (Klar)
   * Data analysis in nutritional research (Lausen)
   * Psychology and the social sciences (Engel, Feger)
   * Linguistics, computer linguistics (Naumann)
   * Archaeology (Vach, Weber)

Within the framework of the conference, workshops, tutorials and software
demonstrations are planned, among others on

   * Conceptual Classification in Medicine (Klar)
   * Computational Statistics (Härdle et al.)
   * Data Bases and Information Systems (Oberweis, Stucki)
   * Continued Education for Librarians (Hobohm) -> 2. InetBib-Tagung
   * Data Analysis in Archaeology (Ihm)

Conference languages are German and English. A peer-reviewed proceedings
volume will be published in English by Springer-Verlag. The conference fee
will be 120,-- DM for members of the GfKl or associated societies, and
170,-- DM for nonmembers. This includes the conference proceedings.

Further information will be distributed upon preliminary registration.
Authors wishing to present a talk are requested to send an abstract by
November 15, 1996 to the local organizer, Prof. Dr. I. Balderjahn (see
address below).

Detailed formatting instructions (LaTeX) can be obtained via www-browsers

Accepted abstracts will be included in a summary volume that will be
distributed to conference participants. Authors will be notified of
acceptance by January 15, 1997. Upon acceptance, a complete manuscript can
be submitted for possible inclusion in the proceedings volume.
