EWCBR-98 Fourth European Workshop on Case-Based Reasoning Dublin, Ireland, September 23-25, 1998 Co-Chairs Padraig Cunningham (Univerity of Dublin, Trinity College) Barry Smyth (Univerity College Dublin) Mark Keane (Univerity of Dublin, Trinity College) FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS EWCBR-98 is the fourth workshop in a series of very successful meetings held previously in Kaiserslauten (1993), Paris (1994) and Lausanne (1996). This fourth workshop will be held at the Univerity of Dublin, Trinity College in one of Europe's most vibrant capitals, Dublin (Ireland). The workshop program will be held over a three-day period and involve invited talks, presentations, and posters on both fundamental research in CBR, as well as on industrial applications. It is the organizers hope that the event will be intellectually and socially lively and present snapshot of the current state-of-the art in CBR. SUBMISSION AREAS Paper submissions are invited in the following topic areas (although not exclusively so): - Case representation and case-base maintainance - Aspects of CBR (retrieval, similarity assessment, adaptation, indexing) - Integrating CBR with other techniques (e.g.,inductive learning) - Analogical Reasoning - Applications of CBR in Education, Design, Medicine and Other Areas - Comparative assessments of CBR relative to other AI techniques - CBR-related areas (e.g., corporate memories, intelligent retrieval, reuse) Papers may be accepted for presentations as talks or as posters. All accepted papers will appear in the proceedings. REVIEW CRITERIA Submissions must be identified as either research or applications papers and will be reviewed using criteria appropriate to their category. Review criteria for research papers will include scientific significance, originality, technical quality, and clarity. Review criteria for applications papers will include significance as applications, impact of the results and potential to lead to more powerful technology. Full papers may be submitted in either of two ways: * Electronically, as a UNIX-printable postscript file, plus one hard copy. This is the preferred mode of submission. * In hard copy only, sending five copies. Authors submitting electronically are responsible for assuring that their files are UNIX-printable and for performing the electronic submission on or before April 24th. They must also airmail a single hard copy of the electronic submission to the co-chairs as soon as possible after the electronic submission. Full instructions for electronic submissions will be posted to http://www.cs.ucd.ie/ewcbr-98/ by January 1, 1998. Authors submitting only hard copy must send all five hard copies to the co-chairs to arrive on or before April 24th. Double-sided copies are strongly encouraged. No submissions by fax or submissions arriving after the deadlines will be accepted. In addition, authors must submit an electronic version of their title pages by April 24th. SUMBISSION FORMAT Submitted papers must begin with a cover page containing paper title, authors' names, affiliations, postal addresses, electronic mail addresses, telephone and fax numbers for all authors, and a brief abstract. The cover page must also specify whether the submission is to be reviewed as a research paper or applications paper. Unless the title page designates another contact person, all correspondence will be sent to the first author. Submissions should be in a 12-point font and double-spaced on A4 paper with at least 1 inch margins on all sides. Submissions may be a maximum of 15 pages long, including cover page, figures and references. Submissions that do not adhere to these requirements will not be reviewed. Submitted papers should be new work that has not been published elsewhere or is not about to be published elsewhere. Papers that will be or have been submitted to othere conferences must state this fact on the title page. If a paper is to appear at another conference, it must be withdrawn from EWCBR-98 before June 30th. All authors of accepted papers must transfer their copyrights. CRC AND REGISTRATION Authors of acceped papers will be responsible for providing camera-ready copy formatted in accordance with instructions to be supplied at the time of the notification of acceptance. In order for a paper to appear in the proceedings, at least one of the authors must register for the conference by the deadline for camera-ready copy (June 30th, 1998).
