The CoIL Summer School (http://www.dcs.napier.ac.uk/coil/summerschool/) 28 August – 3 September 2000 at Limerick, Ireland Please excuse this mail if you have already received something about the CoIL Summer School, but this is to remind you of this excellent opportunity to learn more about computational intelligence techniques and have great fun for a week in Ireland at a very reasonable cost. CoIL is the Computational Intelligence and Learning Cluster supported by the European Commission which integrates the four communities undertaking research and applications development in fuzzy logic, evolutionary computing, machine learning and neural networks. The aim of the Summer School is to give participants an opportunity to apply various computational intelligence methods to an array of problems. By special invitation, Lotfi Zadeh will give a seminar on “soft computing”. A number of research “seniors” representing the four CoIL networks will lead tutorial sessions on the different technologies and will select a range of challenging and relevant problems, outlining various methodological solutions. Summer School participants will join in teams to work on a chosen problem, exploring how different techniques can be used for problem solution. Ideally a combination of techniques will be used and the “seniors” will be available for consultation and support through out the week. The idea is for team members to develop solutions together using their complementary skills and backgrounds, and at the end of the week each team will present their work and be expected to prepare a short two-page paper. Prizes will be given to the teams with the a) solution with best success rate b) solution using best combination of techniques c) most innovative solution d) best paper e) best presentation Summer School participants will be encouraged to continue to work, or publish, together once they return to their own organisations. Registration fees have been kept as low as possible and include attendance at all sessions, accommodation and meals as well as workshop materials. Local sponsorship provides for some enjoyable social outings including a visit to a nearby Irish castle and a cruise up the River Shannon. You can take advantage of the early registration fee of 500 Euro by booking your place by 22 July. On-line registration is available at http://www.dcs.napier.ac.uk/coil/summerschool/registration.html I hope you can manage to join us at this informative Summer School.
