The Methodology of Applying Machine Learning

                                     and
      Fifteenth International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML-98),
                                 July 24-26.

This workshop aims at analysing existing experience in order to extract
guidelines for developing real world ML-applications. Submissions will be
encouraged that deal with problem definitions as a basis for ML-
applications, methods for breaking down the complexity of ML-tasks, the
problem of selecting algorithms and the problem of capturing iterativeness
in ML-processes.

The workshop explicitly aims at a further refinement of the state-of-
the-art in ML application instead of being an event on reporting real world
experiences.

The workshop focuses on the following topics:

   * Frameworks for support of (ML-)novices and experts for setting up
     applications and reuse of previously developed application(part)s.
   * Methodological approaches focusing on the process of ML application, or
     sub-processes.
   * Making explicit the (roles of) knowledge necessary for applying ML
   * Matching of problem definitions on specific technique configurations.
   * [ to be described shorter: Identifying the relation of different ML
     strategies for given problem types and identification of the
     characteristics that play a role in describing the initial problems. ]
   * Embedding of the ML application process in methodologies for knowledge
     acquisition and (knowledge) system development
   * Comparison of ML application with application of related techniques
     (e.g. statistical data analysis, neural networks, ...)
   * Mixed-initiative systems -- methods for combining the strengths
