Description
THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER SCHOOL OF INFORMATICS PROFESSOR AND DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONAL CENTRE FOR TEXT MINING (Reference 1005/04) The School of Informatics is looking to appoint a Professor in Text Mining. The new Professor will also fulfill the role of Director of the UK Centre for Text Mining - a JISC/BBSRC/EPSRC funded £1M new centre established in June 2004. The remit of the recently established National Centre for Text Mining is to contribute to the associated national and international research agenda, to establish a service for the wider academic community, and to make connections with industry. Your role as Director is to foster successful development of the Centre in liaison with the funding bodies, to oversee the associated staff, and to help to achieve its long-term sustainability. The Centre will be co-located with the new Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre. The School of Informatics is the direct successor to the Department of Computation at UMIST, which was formed in 1968 with a focus on the application of computing to the needs of business, society and government. This emphasis on the application of IT has remained an essential part of our ethos and we have a well-established reputation for graduates who meet the needs of industry and commerce. The research activity within the School focuses on the multidisciplinary process of analysing and designing complex systems. The overall research aim is to advance fundamental knowledge in the theory and modeling of computing and information processing systems. We apply such knowledge to improving both the design process and the product quality of software artefacts, pervasive computing and complex socio-technical systems. The text mining activity is expected to contribute fully to the School's research activities in the lead up to the next national Research Assessment Exercise and beyond. You should have an outstanding record of original research with an international reputation for scholarly contributions in the field of text mining, as evidenced by, for example, publications in leading journals and conferences, invitations to give keynote addresses at international conferences, the award of distinguished fellowships, and substantial related research funding.
