Description
The Fraunhofer Institute for Autonomous Intelligent Systems (http://www.ais.fraunhofer.de/index.en.html) is pleased to announce 2 Research Engineer positions for doing research and development using a novel machine learning technique called Echo-State Networks, or ESNs. The positions are for an initial duration of 1 year with a possible 6 month extension. We are seeking candidates with degrees in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or related fields and preferably with some industrial experience. A good command of English is required; German skills would be an additional assett. ESNs are a novel type of recurrent neural network developed and patented in AIS which can be trained extremely efficiently for tasks in nonlinear control, filtering, prediction, pattern recognition and pattern generation. Please consult http://www.ais.fraunhofer.de/INDY/echo_net_research.html for details. The principal investigator for this project is the inventor of ESNs, Dr. Herbert Jaeger http://www.ais.fraunhofer.de/INDY/herbert/. The announced positions will aim to apply the ESN technique to a few selected practical problems for eventual commercialization. In this respect, the work will be applied in nature and will be focused on creating demonstrations and working prototypes in a specific application domain. The results of this work will be used to solicit interest from investors and/or technology partners. Currently, the following application domains are being investigated more closely: (1) control of strongly nonlinear electrical machines, specifically, fast moving mobile robots and switched reluctance motors, (2) equalization of mildly nonlinear digital communication channels, specifically, high-gain satellite radio transmitters, (3) filtering and prediction of strongly stochastic signals, especially speech signals. The list of examined types of applications is however open and candidates with a background from another area of nonlinear systems engineering are explicitly encouraged to apply. Salary will follow the German categories BAT 2a or 1b according to qualification, age and maritial status (basic salary ranging from 2000 to 3000 Euro per month, plus various add-ons). Fraunhofer AIS is an equal opportunity employer. The positions will be located on the campus of the new, English-language International University - Bremen.
