| A PhD scholarship is available at Edinburgh University, Division of Psychiatry in the field of Artificial Intelligence, Magnetic Resonance image processing and statistical analysis to implement automated fine grain parcellation of brain structure. The successful candidate will join a well resourced MR imaging and clinical neuro-science team. Automation of brain parcellation will significantly contribute to the future analysis of an extensive data set held by the Division of Psychiatry. Fine Grain Brain Parcellation presents a high dimensional imaging problem that involves the machine implementation of human visual perception and the integration of a Bayesian estimation theory. Due to inherent MR image variability an AI solution that incorporates a soft constraints approach should be considered. The distributed occurrence of brain structures in a normal population will give rise to parcellation uncertainty. Acquired machine knowledge, obtained through machine learning with supervised context correction, should be considered as a basis for the reduction of these uncertainties. A strong mathematical background with graduate proficiency in programming languages such as C and Matlab, and familiarity with AI and imaging processing are required.
