Description

The Northern Ireland Knowledge Engineering Laboratory

The Northern Ireland Knowledge Engineering Laboratory (NIKEL) was established eight years ago in collaboration with International
Computers Limited, with initial financial assistance from the European Community. Today it is a flourishing centre with staff and
students carrying out leading edge research and technology transfer in data mining, case-based reasoning, Medical Informatics and
Internet Technologies. NIKEL has its main laboratory at the Jordanstown campus, but has close links with staff in the other
University campuses at Londonderry and Coleraine.

NIKEL hosts the European Marie Curie Training Site for "Personalising E-Commerce Using Web Mining", and is involved in projects with
European and local partners, and undertakes consultancy work in its areas of expertise.

NIKEL's technical focus is concentrated in the fields of data mining, case based reasoning, and other knowledge-based
technologies, and it is in these areas that we seek to develop applications for complex commercial, medical and industrial problems.

We are keen to expand our portfolio of projects, and are keen to recruit staff to help propose and engage in new research areas.

The following post is available within the laboratory:

Research Fellow / Officer: NIKEL

Applications are invited for the post of Research Fellow/Officer, initially tenable for 1 year, to start as soon as possible. The
person appointed will be responsible for day-to-day research and development activities in NIKEL, including the design and
implementation of research projects.

The appointee will be expected to assist in the establishment of links between NIKEL and project collaborators, and with the
dissemination and exploitation of the research. Previous experience of writing project proposals and/or business plans would be an
advantage, and good communication skills and the ability to work with an inter-disciplinary team are essential. It is essential that
the candidate is self-motivated, and candidates who can demonstrate innovative or entrepreneurial skills will be preferred.

Applicants must be familiar with the field of AI, and competency in C/C++ or Java is desirable. Applicants who have experience of
Data Mining or Case Based Reasoning will be particularly welcome.

For the post of Research Fellow, applicants must hold a first or second class honours degree in Computer Science or a related
discipline. Four years research or relevant industrial experience is essential. Candidates who possess less than four years
experience but more than two years will be considered for the same post on the Research Officer scale.
