Description

Unilever Research delivers advanced innovation through science and technology in order to support and drive forward Unilever's businesses. We have currently a vacancy under the Marie-Curie scheme for a postdoctoral fellow to carry out research in the following area.

Decision tree methods for data mining. Decision trees have proved a very successful tool for the analysis of very large data sets due to their scalability and the ease with which the resulting models can be interpreted and exploited. Unilever is developing a substantial CRM (Consumer Relationship Management) capability and will be applying these techniques to sizeable databases of consumer habits and attitudes. The research will consist of obtaining deeper insights into the ways in which the different families of decision tree algorithms behave, seeing if performance can be improved by creating hybrid algorithms with neural nets and logistic regression and testing how well recent techniques such as arcing and bagging work in practice. In addition, every opportunity will be afforded to stay current with leading edge research being done in this commercially valuable field and to develop and apply novel methods.

The fellowship lasts two years and will be based at our Port Sunlight Laboratory in North-West England. This vacancy is only open to researchers who are not based in the UK and meet certain other European Union eligibility criteria detailed below.

To apply you will possess a PhD in any of computer science, mathematics, statistics, AI, or a related discipline. In addition you will have good computer programming skills, good communication skills and ideally good academic contacts and an exposure to data handling and large scale modelling. As a research fellow you will benefit from exposure to a modern, forward-looking industrial research environment and receive structured training under our Scientist Development Scheme. Help with relocation can be provided where necessary. The fellow will receive a subsistence and mobility allowance in line with Marie-Curie guidelines (see http://improving-mcf.sti.jrc.it/project/).

To apply for this positions send a full CV indicating your preferred area of research and including two referees to Philip Whittall, DPBSU, Unilever Research Port Sunlight Laboratory, Bebington, Wirral, CH63 3JW, UK; or email [email protected] including 'EU postdoc' in the subject line. We are intending to fill this position by the end of October 2000, therefore the application deadline is the 31st of July 2000 with interviews to be held in September 2000.
