Description

The Smart Media Institute, a research center in University College
Dublin's Computer Science Department, has an opening for a
Research Programmer.

We are currently investigating techniques for indexing and searching
structured text documents. Emerging standards such as XML simplify
data exchange, but existing techniques for soft IR-style querying of
such data are insufficient. This position will involve a combination
of programming in service of our on-going research, and system
administration to support this and other research projects. This
position is well suited for those contemplating doctoral research at a
later stage.
Candidates should have a primary degree in Computer Science or a
cognate discipline, solid software engineering background, and an
interest in computer science research. Knowledge of the following
would be particularly relevant: Java and Perl programming; Web
technologies (HTML, Javascript, XML); databases; artificial
intelligence; information retrieval; Linux and NT system
administration.
This position is for one year, starting September-October 2000.
Salary: Euro 2000-2300 per month, depending on experience. Interested
applications should send a CV, two letters of reference, and a brief
description of their software engineering experience, to the contact
address below.

With an emphasis on artificial intelligence, personalized Web content,
and information retrieval, the Smart Media Institute conducts basic
research into next-generation intelligent information services. The
UCD Computer Science Department comprises 23 academic staff members
and some 70 postgraduate students, and has recently expanded into a
second dedicated building. University College Dublin is the largest
university in Ireland, and Dublin is an intriguing (albeit damp) place
to live.

University College Dublin is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are
required to give preference to European Union applicants, but non-EU
citizens are encouraged to apply, as it will probably be possible to
obtain a temporary Irish work permit.

Additional information about the Department is available at www.cs.ucd.ie.
