Description
The Open University, UK Knowledge Media Institute Research Fellowship in Knowledge and Internet Technologies (6 years post no. 11373) The Knowledge Media Institute of the Open University has been awarded over £1M by the UK's Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) to carry out research in the application of knowledge and Internet technologies to support knowledge creation and sharing in organisations. This highly prestigious award has been obtained in the context of the EPSRC Programme on Interdisciplinary Research Collaborations centred on Information Technology. The project, which is called AKT: Advanced Knowledge Technologies, is being carried out by a consortium comprising 5 UK universities and backed by over 20 industrial, commercial and governmental organisations. The AKT consortium plans to develop a number of Internet-based solutions to support web-based collaborative work, intelligent search, electronic publishing, and automated information extraction. The aim is to achieve a quantum leap in the way the Internet is harnessed to support knowledge creation, sharing and retrieval. The official project page can be found at http://www.aktors.org/. The appointment will be made on the Research staff salary scale, £16,775 - £25,213 p.a., or £23,256 - £30,967, depending on qualifications and experience. Applications are welcomed from researchers with a background in knowledge and/or Internet technologies. Successful applicants will join a world-class, multi-disciplinary research group, which is at the forefront of research and development in knowledge modelling and management. Our researchers are developing a variety of technologies, such as artificial intelligence technologies (especially knowledge technologies), environments for web-based collaborative work, software visualisation solutions and intelligent agents. We currently have over a dozen externally funded industrial and research projects in knowledge technologies and organisational knowledge management. You will have expertise in one or more of the aforementioned research areas, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team, in a high-profile, collaborative research enterprise. A proven track record of developing Internet solutions in academia or industry will be especially advantageous. The Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) is a highly successful, rapidly expanding interdisciplinary laboratory founded at The Open University in 1995, and located in attractive new offices at The Open University's main campus in Milton Keynes, UK. KMi undertakes high-profile advanced research and development in Knowledge Media: a convergence of knowledge, communication and computing technologies. We offer a stimulating and well-endowed research environment, widely acknowledged to be at the leading edge of European research and development, particularly in new technologies for knowledge modelling and management, open supported learning, and synchronous and asynchronous group working. The style, impact and content of our work are described in detail in our Web page, http://kmi.open.ac.uk. Closing date for applications: February 28th, 2001. Interviews will be held before March 16th, 2001.
